Hebridean Adventure

Day 14: Loch Ainort

The camera didn't come out today, so here's a picture of Saturday's Tarbert to Uig ferry to fill the gap

Today we returned to low mist and grey sky with a consequent drop in temperature. We cycled the undulating road along to the A87, my first time after three car journeys along here. The mountain peaks were hidden in the clouds. At Sligachan we joined the main road, the busiest we've cycled along all holiday. Respite was afforded by a long loop of the old road which branched off south of the Raasay ferry port of Sconser and hugged the shore of Loch Ainort. Christine and I had ridden this in the seventies when the whole of the A87 was single track with passing places. Skye then felt like a very special island but the construction of the bridge from the mainland and the upgrading of the main roads makes it feel like a scenic corner of the mainland.

We arrived early at Broadford, at 13:30, but by the time we'd dropped off our bikes at the hostel and shopped it was late afternoon. We took full advantage of the large Co-op store in the village to treat ourselves to plenty of fresh fruit and salads. In the evening the clouds evaporated to present us with a warm and sunny end to the day.
