Day 18: Wet ride to Fort William

The Jacobite steam special from Mallaig drifts into a wet Fort William station

It was Christine's birthday, and a wet one, as is normal for the end of our holiday as we cycle to the railhead ready for our train home. We rode back along the road to Laggan then off along a Forest Enterprise track towards Gairloch. At one point a deer with young zipped across the track about 30 yd ahead of me. Then it was a quiet minor road for four miles until we reached the towpath of the Caledonian Canal which we followed to the outskirts of Fort William. We were soaked by this stage so made straight for the Calluna bunkhouse where we'd stayed two years previously to shower and change. We shot out for a late lunch and shopped at Safeway, calling in at the adjacent railway station to watch the Jacobean steam service arrive. I cooked enchilladas for Christine's birthday meal as a change from all the top of stove rice and pasta dished that had sustained us since leaving home and surprised her with the present I'd bought on Skye.

The following morning we were up early in time to catch the 07:25 train to Glasgow and after a long day on the rails we eventually arrived at Bangor station for the short ride home and the end of another great holiday.
