Barpa Langass
Chatting with other hostellers delayed our start, then we pressed on up the main road northwards and over the causeway to Benbecula, a very dull island dominated by the airport and military buildings. More causeways took us briefly onto Grimsay and delivered us onto North Uist.
We'd planned to ride around the coast in a clockwise direction but the strengthening wind deterred us so we cut inland to Lochmaddy. Actually we preferred the scenery here - away from the coast it was wilder and less inhabited. After investigating Barpa Langass, a huge chambered burial cairn constructed around 3000 BC, we pressed on to the Uist Outdoor Centre at Lochmaddy where we spent the night.
