Christine is almost caught out by a larger than expected wave
Were it not for the chilly east wind, this would have been a perfect summer day, with unbroken sunshine and miles of deserted sandy beaches. It must be the wind that keeps them that way!
We cycled a big loop up the east and down the west coasts of South Harris but started with a look at Rodel church, the only surviving mediaeval church in the Hebrides. The east coast is delightful, a minor road winding its tortuous path through the contours and inlets of the rocky coast with waves crashing to our right. We stopped to talk to a group of cyclists coming the other way before zipping over to the contrasting west coast. This was nut so undulating and the sea views were of vast sandy beaches. The isle of Taransay, featured in the Castaway television programme, lay just offshore, looking close enough to swim to and nowhere near as remote a the programme led us to believe. The last few miles were very hard, the strong headwind preventing us reaching the coffee shop at An t-Ob/Obbe/Leverburgh* before it closed for the day.
