Extra Notes

  • There 33 locomotives were rebuilt from Class 47s at Loughborough.
  • A total of 32 nameplates have been carried by the 57's. The only unnamed one is 57601.
  • These locos were named by theme based on the company who operates them: Freightliner locos carried names beginning with Freightliner, Virgin locos were named after the 1960 TV programme Thunderbirds starting with No. 1 Scott Tracy and First Great Western named there locos ending with Castle and have cast numberplates following their tradition.
  • 57/3s have ugly Dellner couplers for working with Pendolinos for Sunday 'Drags' when engineering work going on, thunderbird duties and even from Crewe to Holyhead.
  • 57601 had the largest number on a loco in Britain
  • 57601 was sold as being non standard
