Extra Notes

  • Ten withdrawn Class 71 locomotives were rebuilt at Crewe. The locomotives involved were: E5003, E5005, E5006, E5015, E5016, E5017, E5019, E5021, E5023, and E5024.
  • These locomotives were not entirely successful in persuading British Rail to continue using Classes 71 and 74 longer than 1977.
  • These locomotives had been converted from third rail electric power, to both diesel and electric power.
  • Involved in the rebuilding was the pioneer Class 71, E5024. This locomotive eventually became 74004, and was disposed of in 1978 at Long Marston
